Pocket Size Theatre and Liza Heinrichs (Captured by Liz) have teamed up again and created our new series 'Coming Home'. In this new piece, we look at the reopening of Theatres in London and around the country and celebrate our industry coming back. We got together some performers who will be some of the first to return to theatres and created this piece to bring some positivity to the theatre industry which has been through one of the toughest years in our lifetime. Whilst it is important to acknowledge the hardships we've all gone through, it's important we pull together as a community and celebrate our beloved industry finally coming back!
Lucie Jones has become one of the top leading ladies of our time, proving time and time again, with every show she does, just how much talent she exudes. Recently she turned her hand once again to a role she knows pretty well, playing the role of Jenna in the touring production of Waitress, a role she played her last performance in last week before heading into play Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked in the new year.
Lucie is absolutely no stranger to leading a company with a plethora of credits to her name, after appearing on the X Factor as a contestant she made her West End debut as Cosette in Les Miserables at the then called Queen’s Theatre. Most recently she has returned to the show as Fantine in the concert version of the show at the newly named Sondheim Theatre. In fact, she opened the tour of Waitress on the Sunday and then returned to Les Mis to complete her run!
Lucie’s other credits include Martha Percy in Treason at Cadogan Hall, Heidi in Title of Show at the London Coliseum, Maureen in Rent at The Other Palace and on the UK Tour, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde at the Leicester Curve, UK Tour and South Korea Opera House, Victoria in American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre, Molly in Ghost on the International Tour, Emily in A Christmas Carol at the Lyceum, Meatloaf in We Will Rock You on the International Arena Tour and Holly in The Wedding Singer on tour across the UK.
Establishing herself as one of the biggest leading ladies of our time is not an easy job but Lucie does also tell us it's important to listen to yourself, this time has taught her its important to embrace that time off; “Never forget this time and be forever grateful that we are back. However, don’t let that gratefulness come a the cost of your health. You can be grateful and take a day off!”
With so many things coming to light and important conversations being had about our industry over the pandemic, Lucie seems pretty optimistic about the future of theatre, “Our industry has come back with a stronger and more united front than ever.” A positive attitude when we’re moving forward is so important, whilst there are changes that needs to be made we must also acknowledge the amazing thing we’ve all overcome during this time. “It is important that we remember this time and how we’ve been able to see things clearly and make changes that are better for us and our audience members.”
We asked Lucie what opening night she would have liked to have been present at and she tells us she in fact was there, of course, it was the reopening of Waitress! Having had her run cut short in the London production it's wonderful that the country got another chance to see her faultless portrayal of Jenna.
You can catch the touring production of Waitress in a theatre near you with dates through to the 20th August 2022. It's a beautiful show and the cast are phenomenal, make sure you catch this one! Lucie opens as Elphaba in Wicked at the Apollo Vicotria Theatre from the 1st February 2022.
