REVIEW: The Barricade Boys at the Other Palace

Back by popular demand following their critically acclaimed season in 2017, and hot off their 40 city 2019 UK tour, the Barricade Boys have come home for Christmas, with their brand new festive residency at The Other Palace Theatre in Victoria (Studio space).

Having only seen the Barricade Boys briefly in action at this year’s West End Live Festival in Trafalgar Square, I was eager to see them perform a full concert, and what better way to start than with a Christmas Cabaret; the most wonderful time of the year. A sentiment that these four boys certainly didn’t fail to disappoint.

It became quickly apparent as to why this quartet have had sell out performances in London’s West End, an appearance at the St James Theatre on Broadway, and continue to delight audiences worldwide in their international dates and appearances. Plain and simply, they know how to put on a bloody good show! Truly showcasing some of the finest voices that London’s West End has to offer.

Although advertised as a Christmas Cabaret, this show provides the best of both worlds, with a beautiful blend of musical theatre and Christmas classics, with a dash of pop, rock, swing, operatic arias and jazz from some of the most iconic artists in history for good measure. With uniquely designed musical arrangements, the boys transitioned between these genres effortlessly, at times almost undetected. The set was planned brilliantly, ensuring there was no focus on one particular genre, or musical for that matter at any point within the show. There was a perfect balance between powerful ballads, and light hearted festive jingles. Certainly something to entertain every age in any family.

Undoubtedly, the biggest attribute to these boys is their charisma, personality and comedic timing. It is one thing to sing beloved show tunes in beautiful four part harmony, but to deliver it with the ease, charm and humour that this quartet does, it is no wonder as to why they are rapidly becoming theatreland’s hottest male vocal group. They created an atmosphere where you felt included, relaxed and most importantly, FESTIVE. With hilarious adlibs, dashing looks, and sharp costumes, it was clear to see that this brotherhood thrive off not only what they do, but off the energy and raw talent of each other, and their musical director.

If you are looking for a classic evening of festive fun this December, I would
have no question about booking tickets to see The Barricade Boys Christmas Cabaret. It allows you to instantly relax into the charm of Christmas, and reminds you that often all you need for a stellar evening of entertainment is four microphones, a piano, and four undeniably talented vocalists. This show is a perfect Christmas gift, and one not to miss! Just like mince pies, with these boys, you will want to go back for a second helping!
