12 Brits who are flying the flag on Broadway!




Brits have been flying the flag on Broadway for years now, some huge names who have starred on Broadway include Julie Andrews, Carey Mulligan, Michael Xavier, Helen Mirren, Ruth Wilson and Catherine Zeta Jones, to name but a few! We wanted to take a look at some of the West End stars who are living the dream on the Great White Way! We focus on 12 performers who are all doing the West End proud! 

Olivia Phillip

Olivia made her West End debut in Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Palace Theatre before appearing in Ghost the Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre and The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre. She went on to play Velma on board the Royal Caribbean before making the move over to America. She made her Broadway debut in Diaster! at the Nederlander Theatre in 2016 before featuring in the Broadway production of Waitress. She is currently part of the Original Broadway cast of Frozen, which opens in February 2018 having done an out of town try out in Denver. @OliviaPhillip

Gavin Lee 

Gavin is a proven West End leading man; playing leads in Top Hat, Singin' in the Rain, Crazy For You, Peggy Sue Got Married, A Saint She Ain’t, Me And My Girl, Oklahoma! and Contact. Gavin made his Broadway debut playing Bert in Mary Poppins, a role he originated in London at the Prince Edward Theatre and later played the role on tour across America. He last played Thenadier in Les Miserables on Broadway and is currently playing Squidward Q. Tentacles in Spongebob Square Pants in the original Broadway cast. 

Chloe Campbell 

Chloe's London credits include On the Town (London Coliseum), Desperately Seeking Susan (Novello Theatre), Shoes (Sadler's Wells & Peacock Theatre) and Mary Poppins (Prince Edward Theatre). When Chloe moved to New York, the first job she got was on the tour of In the Heights. She went on to appear in Can-Can (Papermill Playhouse), West Side Story (Ogunquit Playhouse) and she made her Broadway debut in Tuck Everlasting and is currently in Hamilton in Chicago. 

Stephen Ashfield 

Stephen's extensive list of credits include originating the role of Bob Gaudio in the London production of Jersey Boys at the Prince Edward Theatre, Emmitt in Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre, Nick Piazza in Fame at the Aldwych Theatre and Casey O'Brien in Boy Meets Boy at the Jermyn Street Theatre. He featured in the original London company of The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the role of Elder Mckinley, which he won the Olivier Award for best supporting actor in a musical. He is currently reprising the role in the Broadway production. @stephenashfield

Charlie Stemp 

This West end star has proved he can win over audiences in London, after charming everyone in the role of Arthur Kipps in the recent revival of Half A Sixpence at the Chichester Festival Theatre and the Noel Coward Theatre. He is currently playing the title role in Dick Whittington at the London Palladium before flying off to America next year and featuring in the Broadway cast of Hello, Dolly! playing the role of Barnaby Tucker. @Charlie_Stemp ‏ 


Scarlett Strallen 

Scarlett's huge list of credits include Kathy in Singin' in the Rain (Olivier Award nomination) at the Chichester Festival Theatre, Clara in Passion (Donmar Warehouse), Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (London Palladium), Mavis in The Witches of Eastwick (Theatre Royal Drury Lane) and Mamma Mia! (Prince Edward Theatre). She played the title role in Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre, a role that would later take her to Australia and to make her Broadway debut in New York. Her other credits in New York include Lady McDuff in Macbeth (Off-Broadway), Sibella Hallward in A Gentleman's Guide To Love & Murder (Broadway), Alice Wentworth in The New Yorkers, (New York City Center Theatre) and will play Gwendolen in Travesties this March on Broadway.

Dom Simpson 

Originally from Manchester, Dom graduated from the Arts Educational School in Chiswick, London, in 2016 and immediately made the move over to New York to join the Broadway cast of the Book of Mormon as the Stand by for the leading role of Elder Price. @domsimmo_95




Holly James 

Some of Holly's UK credits include Starlight Express (UK Tour), Porgy and Bess (Savoy Theatre), Hairspray (Shaftesbury Theatre), Fame (UK Tour), Hair (Gielgud Theatre), Kiss Me Kate (Chichester & the Old Vic Theatre), The Bodyguard (Adelphi Theatre) and playing the role of Christine in the world premiere of American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre. She then went on to originate the role of Christine in the Broadway transfer of American Psycho and most recently appeared in the Chicago production of Hamilton. 

Stephen Carlile 

Stephen has a huge list of credits, some include The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty's), The Producers (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), My Fair Lady (National Theatre), Magaldi in Evita (Eurpean Tour), Viscount Trimingham in The Go-Between (Apollo Theatre), Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz (New Vic Theatre) and the title role in Snoopy (Jermyn Street Theatre). He originated the role of Scar in the National tour of The Lion King in the UK and is now reprising the role in the Broadway Production, marking his Broadway debut. @carlilestephen ‏ 

Jeanna De Waal 

Jeanna featured in the West End production of We Will Rock You before making the move over to America. She has worked extensively in America, some of her credits include the title role in Orwell in America, Lauren in Kinky Boots (Broadway), Glinda in Wicked (National Tour), Heather in American Idoit (Broadway), Chris Hargensen in Carrie (Off-Broadway) and Dawn in Waitress (Ameircan Rep Theatre). She currently runs 'Broadway Weekends', a weekend workshop where people from all walks of life can come and take classes with Broadway stars. @thebigdewaal ‏ 

Mark Evans 

Mark is a true leading man and before moving to America, had a wonderful career here in London. His credits include Fiyero in Wicked (Apollo Victoria Theatre), Sam Wheat in Ghost (Piccadilly Theatre), Troy Bolton in High School Musical (Hammersmith Apollo) Curly in Oklahoma! (UK tour) and Brad Majors in The Rocky Horror Show (UK tour). His first job in America was on tour playing the role of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon. Since then he has gone on to appear in The Dreyfus Affair (BAM), Finian’s Rainbow (Irish Rep), The Fix (Signature, DC) Mary Poppins (Paper Mill Playhouse). He is currently making his Broadway debut in The Play That Goes Wrong. @markevansactor ‏ 

Matthew James Thomas 

Probably best known for the TV show Britania High, he has gone on to make a huge name for himself over on Broadway. He moved from the UK to make his Broadway debut as the alternate Peter Parker/Spider Man in the Broadway production of Spider Man: Turn of the Dark before originating the title role in the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin, which he later reprised his performance on the US tour of the show. He starred as Fenwick in a musical adaptation of Barry Levinson's 1982 film, Diner and he last appeared in Time and the Conways, playing Robin on Broadway. @matthewjethomas ‏
