Following on from How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, the reality TV to find the newest star of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium, Andrew Loyd Webber followed it up with Any Dream Will Do. This series searched for the newest star of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. With Graham Norton returning as the host as well as John Barrowman and Zoe Tyler also returning as judges, they were joined by Denise Van Often and Bill Kenwright. Some of the series to follow were I'd Do Anything (The Search for Nancy) and Over the Rainbow (The search for Dorothy). Rival TV shows to these BBC produced series also came up in Superstar (The search for Jesus), Grease is the Word (The search for Danny and Sandy) and Fame: The musical (the search for Nick and Serena). If you are a theatre geek like me, you'll remember these TV shows! And if you don't, you'll certainly know some of the contestants. So, where are they now?
Lee Mead
After winning the show Lee went on to play the role of Joseph from the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Adelphi Theatre. Since leaving the show his theatre credits include the title role in the Lord Arthur Savile's Crime (UK Tour); Fiyero in Wicked (Apollo Victoria Theatre); Emmett in Legally Blonde (Savoy Theatre); lead vocalist in West End Men (Tour and Vaudeville Theatre) Prince Charming in Cinderella (London Palladium), Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (UK Tour) Billy Flynn in Chicago (UK Tour) and The Prince in Snow White (New Wimbledon Theatre). He went on to be a regular character on Casualty, leaving in December 2019. As well as that, he has performed extensively since the show as a solo artist and has released numerous albums, his last in 2018 entitled 'Lee Mead - 10 Years'.
Losing out to Lee Mead, Keith still got to star as Joseph, he went on to play the role for three years on the UK touring production of the show, having also played the Narrator previously in the same production. His other credits include Charlie in Only the Brave (Edinburgh Fringe Festival); Alastair in the UK premiere of Sincerely Mr Toad (Pleasance Theatre); Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore (UK Tour); Sparky in Forever Plaid (St. James Theatre), toured the UK with Joe McElderry in Saturday Night at the Movies. Nick in Fame (UK Tour & Troubadour Theatre Wembley), Ally in Sunshine on Leith & Freddie Fellows in Noises Off (Pitlochry Festival Theatre) and the title role in Aladdin (The Sands Centre). Keith has released two albums, His debut was called This Time and went straight into the Top 40 and his most recent album An Evening at the Musicals was released in 2010.
Lewis Bradley
Even though he came third in the TV show, Lewis did get to play Joseph in the West End revival, he filled in for Lee Mead during one of his absences. He later went on to fill in for Lee Mead again when he took over the role of Fiyero in Wicked until Lee finished his tour, he then understudied the role whilst appearing in the ensemble. His other credits include the male lead on the Cruise Ship MS Rotterdam and for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines; Prince in Sleeping Beauty (Grand Theatre Blackpool); Eddie Arch in Lowerville (Union Theatre) and Bert Healy in Annie (UK Tour).
Ben Ellis
After the show, Ben toured with a production of The Music of Dirty Dancing. He later went on to originate the role of Link the London premiere of the Broadway smash hit Hairspray at the Shaftesbury Theatre. His other credits include Norman in Dreamboats and Petticoats (Playhouse Theatre & UK Tour); Vocalist on Queen Mary 2, Saturday Night at the Movies (UK Tour with Joe McElderry) and The Prince in Snow White (Aylesford Friars). He made a return to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but this time in the role of the Pharaoh. He performed this role on the UK touring production of the show. He is currently the head of Musical Theatre at Diverse Performing Arts in Dubai.
Craig Chalmers
After leaving the show and not winning the role of Joseph, Craig still got the chance to play the role on the UK touring production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He was set to play Prince Charming at the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline, Scotland in 2012 but was let out go his contract after his newfound porn career came to the surface. He goes by the Porn name Ryan Ryder. @RyanRyderxxx
Daniel Boys
After the show, Daniel has gone on to play Princeton/Rod in Avenue Q (Gielgud/Noel Coward); Sir Lancelot in Spamalot (Playhouse); Anthony in Sweeney Todd (Royal Festival Hall); Christian in Wolfboy (Trafalgar Studios); Jason in Ordinary Days (Trafalgar Studios); Captain Walker in Tommy (Prince Edward); Mike Connor in High Society (National Tour); Oliver in Love Story (Bolton Octagon); Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (Charing Cross Theatre); Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors (Clwyd Theatr); The Boys in the Band (UK tour, Vaudville & Park Theatre) and Paul Maddens in Nativity the Musical (UK Tour). Most recently he played Marvin in Falsettos at the Other Palace and appeared in the staged concert production of The Pirate Queen at the London Coliseum. @danielboys
Rob McVeigh
After the show he entered BBC One's Eurovision - Your Decision 2008, however, failed to secure the prize. In 2010 he was cast in as Jamie in Popstar the Musical on tour and In 2011 he went on to play Dan Cassidy in Over the Rainbow, the Eva Cassidy Story (UK tour) as well as being cast in the National tour of Annie the Musical. He went on to be an entertainer on a variety of cruise ships before setting up his own company, MCV Management, a company who provide entertainers for events. @RobMcVeigh
Chris Barton
After the show, Chris went on to appear as Benjamin in the touring production of Joseph. His other credits include Swing in Spring Awakening (Lyric Hammersmith & Novello Theatre); Sketch in Hairspray (Shaftesbury Theatre); Rolf in the Sound of Music (National Tour); the original cast of "Coronation Street- The Musical" (Manchester's MEN Arena); Its only Life (Brighton Fringe) and Starlight Express (Bochum). He has appeared in many television programs since, such as Hollyoaks, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and From Here to There. He was recently seen on the TV All Together Now as part of the boyband Xavier. @chrisbarton22
Seamus Cullen
After the programme, Seamus got a role in the international tour of Thriller! Live and starred as Che in the touring production of Evita. He was seen competing for the role of Jesus in the show 'Superstar' on ITV in 2012. The contestants competed to win the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, the role was given to Ben Forster.
Antony Hansen
After losing out on the role of Joseph, Antony did eventually go on to have a history with the show. He played all three roles of Joseph, Napthali and Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on the UK touring production of the show. He last appeared as Courfeyrac and understudy Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at the Queen's Theatre. His other credits include understudy Parson Nathaniel in War of the Worlds (Dominion); Soldier and understudy Raoul in The Phantom of The Opera (Her Majesty’s); alternate Charles Darnay in the new musical version of A Tale of Two Cities (Charing Cross Theatre); ensemble and understudy Fiyero in Wicked (Apollo Victoria); ensemble and understudy Marius in Les Misérables (Queen’s). @antonyhansen
Johndeep More
After being the second person to be eliminated from the competition, Johndeep has played Saleem Khan in East is East (Birmingham Rep); Sajit in East is East (UK tour); Indian Boyfriend (Theatre Royal Stratford East); Ensemble, U/S Kamal, Zaman and Amir in The Kite Runner (Wyndhams Theatre) and Seyyed Hassan in Occupational Hazards (Hampstead Theatre). Chris Crosby
Upon leaving the show, Chris was cast in Bill Kenwrights touring production of Half a Sixpence. as well as appearing in pantomimes Aladdin and Cinderella at the Cliffs Pavilion and Theatre Royal, Windsor.
